This 2005-6 season Le Théâtre de la Chandelle Verte is excited to present Une soirée Ionesco, an evening dedicated to Eugène Ionesco and his absurd comedy, La Leçon. An existential comedy first presented in 1950, La Leçon depicts a simple scene in which a student, greeted by a maid, meets a professor in his private bureau for a lesson. Gradually, the veneer of a polite tutorial morphs into a comical nightmare. In this lesson, numbers lose their value, phonetics trigger a maddening toothache, and words provoke derision and violence. A darkly comic power-play, La Leçon promises to delight academic audiences as it upsets the balance between teaching, learning, sense, nonsense and more…. |
